Four Days Deep in Nicaragua's Wildest Rainforest

Indio Maíz is one of the last truly untouched rainforests in Central America. Home to jaguars, monkeys, sloths, toucans and communities who’ve lived alongside the jungle for generations. This trip takes you from the colonial calm of Granada, down the San Juan River, and straight into the reserve for nights of camping under the canopy.

Day-by-Day

Your Itinerary

A rough guide to each day, timings flex a little with river and weather conditions.

Day 1- Granada to El Castillo

Your adventure starts with a 3:30 AM pickup as we make our way to San Carlos. After breakfast, we board a traditional local boat and travel along the San Juan River to El Castillo. At the dock, your local guide is waiting to welcome you before heading deeper into the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve.

Day 2 - Into the Reserve

After breakfast, choose from three jungle hikes, birdwatching, fishing, canoeing or other activities while searching for jaguars, sloths, monkeys, caimans and other wildlife. After dark, we head out for a night boat tour to experience the rainforest from a completely different perspective.

Day 3 - Deep Jungle & Night Hike

Today is all about making the most of your time in Indio Maíz. Head back into the jungle to explore new trails or choose one of the many activities around basecamp. After dark, we'll head into the rainforest for a night hike, where the jungle comes alive with frogs, spiders, snakes and other nocturnal wildlife.

Day 4 - Return Journey

After breakfast, we leave the rainforest behind and return to El Castillo, where we board the local boat back to San Carlos. After enjoying lunch, we'll make the drive back to Granada, bringing four unforgettable days in the heart of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve to an end.

Choose your own jungle adventure

One of the best things about the 4 Day Indio Maíz Camping Tour is that you decide how you spend your time. Together with your guide, you can choose from a wide variety of activities depending on your interests and the conditions in the reserve. Explore the rainforest on guided jungle hikes, head out on a night hike to search for nocturnal wildlife, or take a night boat tour to spot caimans along the riverbanks. You can also go birdwatching, horseback riding, fishing or cool off with a refreshing swim in the river.

The experience is also about connecting with the local community. Learn how to make traditional tortillas, prepare fresh local cheese and discover the traditional process of making chocolate from cacao grown in the region. Every day is different, allowing you to create your own jungle adventure while learning about one of Nicaragua’s most important ecosystems. On the final day, we’ll return by boat to San Carlos for lunch before driving back to Granada or Managua. If you’re continuing your journey elsewhere in Nicaragua, simply let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to arrange your drop-off.

Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, alle waren super freundlich und zuvorkommend. Wir haben tolle Touren gebucht und auch hier wurde auf jeden Wunsch eingegangen. Das Frühstück war super und auch zum Verweilen lädt das Café ein. Der Oreo Cheesecake war hammer! Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis unserer Meinung nach. We stayed 4 nights in Casa Mundo Verde and Leonel & Margreet completely transformed our experience of Leon simply by being so nice and so helpful. They organize cooking classes with traditional Nicaraguan food, walking tours and other activities. They work together with other tours so they were able to arrange anything we asked for. We were lucky to be in town during the traditional feast of Gritaria Chica, and Leonel instantly created a walking tour to allow the guests to experience the feast like a local. We had a lot of fun getting to know the tradition and collecting candies. If you are lucky enough to have half our experience in here, you're in for a great time. Oh, and they run in place a nice coffee shop, with very good local coffee and delicious cakes. Our room was also very nice, it was large, very clean and very comfortable beds. This is a very new place, it opened just a month ago, but I believe it will be one of the most popular in a short time.

Where do we sleep during the tour?

You’ll stay at a jungle basecamp inside the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve. Basic showers are available, but there is no phone signal or internet.

What activities are included?

You can choose from activities such as jungle hiking, night hikes, night boat tours, canoeing, birdwatching, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, tortilla making, cheese making, and chocolate making.

What wildlife can we see?

The reserve is home to sloths, caimans, monkeys, colourful birds, snakes, spiders, frogs, butterflies, and many other rainforest species. Wildlife sightings always depend on nature, but every day offers new opportunities.

Where does the tour start?

Pickup is at 3:30 AM from Granada or Managua. We drive to San Carlos for breakfast before taking the boat to El Castillo and entering the reserve.

Can I be dropped off somewhere else after the tour?

Yes. If you’re continuing your trip to another destination in Nicaragua, let us know before the tour and we’ll do our best to arrange a different drop-off location.
