Why This Trip

Camp in the reserve

The 6 days South Nicaragua tour begins with an early 3:30 AM pickup as we make our way to San Carlos for breakfast before boarding the boat to the historic riverside village of El Castillo. Here, your local guide welcomes you before leading you into the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, one of the largest and most biodiverse rainforests in Central America. Our jungle basecamp will be your home for the next few days. You’ll have a shower and comfortable camping facilities, but no phone signal or internet, giving you the perfect chance to truly disconnect and enjoy life surrounded by nature.

The best part? You decide how adventurous your days will be. Choose from activities including jungle hikes, night hikes, night boat tours, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, birdwatching, swimming, chocolate making, tortilla and cheese making, or simply relax and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest. Along the way, you might spot sloths, monkeys, caimans, colourful birds, spiders, snakes and countless other species that call Indio Maíz home. Every day is different, making this one of the most immersive nature experiences Nicaragua has to offer.

Why This Trip

Los Guatuzos & Solentiname Islands

After leaving El Castillo, we travel back to San Carlos, where our private boat is ready to take us into the peaceful wetlands of Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge. While cruising through the reserve, we’ll keep an eye out for wildlife before stopping for lunch along the way. Later that day, we continue to the beautiful Solentiname Archipelago, where a delicious home-cooked dinner and warm local hospitality await.

The following day is all about discovering the unique culture of the islands. We’ll learn about Ernesto Cardenal, the famous Nicaraguan priest, poet, artist and peace activist who founded the artistic community on Solentiname and helped put these islands on the map. After lunch, you’ll join a traditional balsa wood handicraft workshop, where local artisans teach you the techniques that have been passed down for generations. As the sun begins to set, we’ll head out for a peaceful boat tour across the lake before spending one final evening on the islands. On our last day, we return to San Carlos after lunch before driving back to Granada or Managua, bringing an unforgettable six-day adventure through southern Nicaragua to a close.
