Day 1- Hike to the top of the Cloud Forest

We leave at 7:30 AM and head straight for the beautiful Cascada Blanca. After lunch in Macizo de Peñas Blancas, we begin our hike through the cloud forest, learning about its unique ecosystem along the way. Just before sunset, we'll reach our campsite, set up our tents and spend the night surrounded by nature.

Day 2 - Birdwatching

We wake up early for a birdwatching walk, hoping to spot the spectacular Resplendent Quetzal and Nicaragua's national bird, the Guardabarranco. After breakfast, we'll pack up our campsite and hike back down through the cloud forest. Following lunch, we head back towards Matagalpa after a quick stop at Cascada de la Luna.

The 2 Days Macizo de Peñas Blancas camp tour takes you deep into one of Nicaragua’s most impressive cloud forests. Together with a local guide, you’ll hike through misty mountain trails, cross small rivers and discover waterfalls hidden among the dense forest. Along the way, you’ll learn about the unique ecosystem of Macizo de Peñas Blancas, home to hundreds of bird species, colourful orchids, monkeys and countless native plants. As you climb higher into the reserve, you’ll discover how the cloud forest naturally filters rainwater, providing fresh water to nearby communities.

One of the highlights of the hike is reaching the famous Fountain of Youth, where you can cool off with a refreshing swim during the climb. The trail is moderate to challenging, with plenty of stairs and natural paths that can become slippery after rain, but every step is rewarded with spectacular scenery and unforgettable views.

Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, alle waren super freundlich und zuvorkommend. Wir haben tolle Touren gebucht und auch hier wurde auf jeden Wunsch eingegangen. Das Frühstück war super und auch zum Verweilen lädt das Café ein. Der Oreo Cheesecake war hammer! Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis unserer Meinung nach. We stayed 4 nights in Casa Mundo Verde and Leonel & Margreet completely transformed our experience of Leon simply by being so nice and so helpful. They organize cooking classes with traditional Nicaraguan food, walking tours and other activities. They work together with other tours so they were able to arrange anything we asked for. We were lucky to be in town during the traditional feast of Gritaria Chica, and Leonel instantly created a walking tour to allow the guests to experience the feast like a local. We had a lot of fun getting to know the tradition and collecting candies. If you are lucky enough to have half our experience in here, you're in for a great time. Oh, and they run in place a nice coffee shop, with very good local coffee and delicious cakes. Our room was also very nice, it was large, very clean and very comfortable beds. This is a very new place, it opened just a month ago, but I believe it will be one of the most popular in a short time.

Where does the tour start?

The tour starts with pick-up from Matagalpa. If you’re staying somewhere else, let us know in advance and we’ll see what we can arrange.

How difficult is the hike?

The hike is moderate to challenging. You’ll walk on forest trails, climb plenty of stairs and some sections can be slippery after rain. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Where do we sleep during the tour?

We’ll spend the night camping in the cloud forest. Camping equipment is provided, so all you need to bring is your sense of adventure.

What is included in the tour?

The tour includes transportation, camping equipment, meals and a local guide.
