Indio Maíz Biological Reserve is one of the most untouched rainforests in Central America and one of Nicaragua’s greatest natural treasures. Home to sloths, monkeys, caimans, colourful birds, and countless other wildlife, it’s a place where nature still sets the pace. During this 3 Days Indio Maíz Camp Tour, we’ll leave the city behind, travel along the San Juan River, and venture deep into the reserve, where we’ll camp beneath the jungle canopy and experience life completely off the grid.

Day-by-Day

A rough guide to each day, timings flex a little with river and weather conditions.

Day 1- Travelling to our Basecamp

We leave at 3:30 AM and make our way to San Carlos, where we'll enjoy breakfast before boarding a local boat along the San Juan River. In El Castillo, our local guide is waiting to welcome us before we continue deep into the untouched rainforest of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, where our jungle adventure begins.

Day 2 - Deep Jungle & Night Tour

After breakfast, it's time to choose your adventure. Explore the rainforest on one of the jungle hikes, go birdwatching, fishing or join one of the other activities while keeping an eye out for sloths, monkeys, caimans and colourful birds. After sunset, we'll head onto the river for a thrilling night boat tour, when the jungle truly comes alive.

Day 3 - Leaving the Jungle behind

After breakfast, we say goodbye to the rainforest and go back to El Castillo, where we'll board the local boat to San Carlos. After a well-deserved lunch, we'll hop back in the car and drive to Granada or Managua, bringing an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve to an end.

Choose your own jungle adventure

One of the best things about the 3 Days Indio Maíz camp tour is that no two trips are exactly the same. Together with your guide, you’ll choose the activities that best fit your interests and the conditions in the reserve. Hike through the rainforest, try your luck fishing, spot colourful birds or cool off with a refreshing swim in the river. As night falls, we’ll head out on an unforgettable night boat tour, when the jungle comes alive with caimans and other nocturnal wildlife.

The experience is about more than just nature. You’ll also have the chance to learn traditional skills like making fresh tortillas, local cheese and chocolate from locally grown cacao while spending time with the families who call this rainforest home. After an unforgettable adventure in Indio Maíz, we’ll return by boat to San Carlos for lunch before driving back to Granada or Managua. If you’re continuing your journey elsewhere in Nicaragua, just let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to arrange your drop-off.

Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt, alle waren super freundlich und zuvorkommend. Wir haben tolle Touren gebucht und auch hier wurde auf jeden Wunsch eingegangen. Das Frühstück war super und auch zum Verweilen lädt das Café ein. Der Oreo Cheesecake war hammer! Sehr gutes Preis-Leistungsverhältnis unserer Meinung nach. We stayed 4 nights in Casa Mundo Verde and Leonel & Margreet completely transformed our experience of Leon simply by being so nice and so helpful. They organize cooking classes with traditional Nicaraguan food, walking tours and other activities. They work together with other tours so they were able to arrange anything we asked for. We were lucky to be in town during the traditional feast of Gritaria Chica, and Leonel instantly created a walking tour to allow the guests to experience the feast like a local. We had a lot of fun getting to know the tradition and collecting candies. If you are lucky enough to have half our experience in here, you're in for a great time. Oh, and they run in place a nice coffee shop, with very good local coffee and delicious cakes. Our room was also very nice, it was large, very clean and very comfortable beds. This is a very new place, it opened just a month ago, but I believe it will be one of the most popular in a short time.

Where do we sleep during the tour?

You’ll stay at a jungle basecamp inside the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve. Basic showers are available, but there is no phone signal or internet.

What activities are included?

You can choose from activities such as jungle hiking, night hikes, night boat tours, canoeing, birdwatching, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, tortilla making, cheese making, and chocolate making.

What wildlife can we see?

The reserve is home to sloths, caimans, monkeys, colourful birds, snakes, spiders, frogs, butterflies, and many other rainforest species. Wildlife sightings always depend on nature, but every day offers new opportunities.

Where does the tour start?

Pickup is at 3:30 AM from Granada or Managua. We drive to San Carlos for breakfast before taking the boat to El Castillo and entering the reserve.

Can I be dropped off somewhere else after the tour?

Yes. If you’re continuing your trip to another destination in Nicaragua, let us know before the tour and we’ll do our best to arrange a different drop-off location.
