The Telica Sunset Tour is one of the most rewarding volcano experiences near León. We pick you up in the city and drive approximately 1.5 hours to the trailhead, where your adventure begins. From there, it’s a 45-minute moderate hike to the crater rim of Telica Volcano, one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes. Standing 1,061 metres above sea level, Telica is famous for its impressive crater, which continues to grow as volcanic activity gradually reshapes the landscape.
The hike is steady but suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Along the way, your local guide will share stories about the volcano, the surrounding landscapes, and the volcanic chain that has shaped western Nicaragua. As you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views over the Maribios volcanoes before settling in to watch the sunset from one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the country.
As the sun begins to set, the landscape around Telica Volcano changes completely. From the crater rim, you’ll look down into one of Nicaragua’s largest active craters while steam rises from deep below the surface. You may also notice the distinct smell of sulfur in the air a reminder that you’re standing above an active volcanic system. The sulfur gases are released through small openings in the volcano, where heat from deep underground continues to escape. It’s a fascinating reminder that Telica is constantly changing, and its crater continues to grow with every eruption and collapse.
We’ll take our time to enjoy the moment before beginning the walk back under the evening sky. Once we return to León, we’ll end the day with a traditional Nicaraguan dinner.
