Volcano Boarding in Nicaragua: everything you need to know

Volcano boarding in Nicaragua is one of the most exciting adventures you can experience near León. The hike to the top takes around one hour, giving you time to enjoy the landscape before getting ready to slide back down on your board.

Imagine standing on top of a volcano, surrounded by a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, with views stretching across the Nicaraguan countryside. In front of you is a slope covered in volcanic ash, and waiting for you is a board. It is time to try volcano boarding!

Cerro Negro, just outside León, is one of Nicaragua’s most recognisable volcanoes and the place to experience this unique adventure. At Casa Mundo Verde, we offer volcano boarding tours so you can enjoy the experience with the right equipment, guidance and safety instructions.

Whether you are travelling through Central America with a backpack or looking for an unforgettable activity during your stay in León, this is an adventure worth adding to your itinerary.

What is volcano boarding

Good food is part of the Casa Mundo Verde Volcano boarding is an adventure activity where you slide down the volcanic slopes of Cerro Negro on a specially designed board. Instead of snow, you ride over loose volcanic ash and small volcanic stones.

Before the ride, you hike up the volcano, taking in the unusual landscape and the views across the surrounding countryside. Once you reach the top, you can look out over the volcanic chain and see why this part of Nicaragua is so special.

Then comes the exciting part: getting ready for the ride! Your guide will explain how to use the board, how to position yourself and how to follow the safety instructions. You do not need to figure everything out on your own. We provide the appropriate equipment and explain what you need to know before you start.

How long does it take to hike up Cerro Negro

The hike up Cerro Negro takes around one hour, depending on your pace and the conditions.

The path takes you over volcanic terrain, where the scenery changes as you gain elevation. Parts of the route are exposed to the sun, so take your time, drink enough water and listen to your guide.

When you reach the top, take a moment to enjoy the views before preparing for the ride. The landscape is unlike the green forests and beaches that many travellers associate with Nicaragua.

What should you bring?

We provide the appropriate volcano boarding equipment and give you safety instructions before the activity. You should still come prepared for a walk in a sunny, dusty environment.

We recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable, closed shoes suitable for walking
  • Water to stay hydrated
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Light, breathable clothing
  • A bandana or face covering to help keep dust away

We will explain what equipment is included and what you need to bring before your tour. Follow your guide’s instructions throughout the experience, including where to walk and how to use the board safely.

Is volcano boarding suitable for everyone?

You do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy Cerro Negro, but you should be comfortable walking uphill over uneven volcanic terrain for around an hour.

The ride itself can be fast and dusty, and the experience depends on the conditions on the day. Let us know if you have concerns about your fitness or mobility so you can decide whether the activity is suitable for you.

Our aim is for you to enjoy the adventure while understanding how to take part safely.

What else can you do around Leon?

Cerro Negro is only one reason to spend a few days in León. The city is full of history, art, local food and everyday Nicaraguan life.

You can join Leo’s Free Walking Tour to learn more about León and Nicaragua’s history, visit the museums, explore the cathedral or enjoy a cup of specialty coffee at Casa Mundo Verde.

If you are looking for something even more adventurous, Nicaragua also offers the opportunity to camp on top of a volcano. Spending the night in a volcanic landscape and waking up to views across the countryside is a unique experience. For experienced hikers, San Cristóbal, Nicaragua’s highest volcano at 1,745 metres, is a much more challenging climb that requires careful planning and suitable guidance.

Casa Mundo Verde is just a 3-minute walk from the main centre. It is a welcoming place to start the day with good coffee, meet other travellers and plan your next adventure.
